The Music Theory Proficiency Exam
(Taken at your Audition)
On the day of your audition you will also take
a short examination designed to evaluate your understanding of certain
rudimentary
concepts of music (scales, key signatures, intervals, triads, and basics
of meter and note values). The results of this examination are used
in
part to make a decision on acceptance to our program, and are considered
along with several other factors (your audition, SAT scores, etc.).
The examination is a computer-based test of
musical concepts in multiple-choice format and is taken in small groups
of prospective students in our technology lab. To allow for
convenient scheduling of your solo audition and other activities, the exam
is offered at several times on the day of your audition. The exam
is not timed; you may take as long as you wish to complete it.
Nevertheless, most students complete the exam in roughly twenty minutes.
To give you an idea of the types of questions you will encounter on the
Music
Theory Proficiency Exam we have provided a sample exam (below) along
with an answer key to check your results. The sample exam and answer
key are currently available only in PDF format which requiresAdobe®
Reader® for reading and printing; the software can be downloaded
for free by going
here.
Note that on audition day, you will take the exam at the computer terminal.
