Italian Immigration and the Development of Religious Institutions in Dunkirk and
Fredonia, NY
The Italian immigrants coming into the Dunkirk and Fredonia desired a place to worship. The Italians weren't always welcome in the existing churches, and at times were segregated. They also struggled to understand sermons presented in English. In response to these issues, the Italians contemplated creating their own churches. At this time in history it was not unusual for churches to be established around specific ethnicities. The founding of these churches gave the Italians a strong foundation for development and growth within the community. They also offered support in a time of few social services. The churches were an extension of the Italians' tight knit communities and emphasis on family life. The cause of creating their own identity and preserving their religious traditions united the Italians. The Italians also gained some respect in the local community for their dedication and financial stewardship. In 1905, St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church opened in Fredonia. Following in 1907, St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church was founded. Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church was established in Dunkirk in 1908. The founding of these churches was an enormous financial undertaking that required deep commitment.
