About The Festival

Film and video is a thriving field of study throughout the SUNY system. From the traditional Hollywood narrative to animation, from experimental film and video to documentary work, students and faculty are exploring personal visions through time-based image making. For the forth year in a row, we are excited to share the work that best exemplifies the best of the best with each other, our local communities and the rest of the SUNY system.

Why Submit to a Film Festival?

We want you to experience a competitive and juried festival. You may have thousands of hits on YouTube but is that your ideal audience? Has your work stood up to tough scrutiny beyond the classroom?

Getting into a competitive festival while still in school is a powerful testament to the work a student is doing, but this is an educational opportunity that is often overlooked by students or ignored because of the often-expensive entry fees. We want to provide a chance for students within the SUNY system to experience what it is like to apply and get into a festival; to be able to add their accomplishment to their applications to graduate school, or grants, and to start building their curriculum vitae or resume.

An additional goal for the festival revolves around our commitment to enriching our academic and local communities with entertaining, thought-provoking and challenging film and video work. Over the next few months we hope to make announcements about these goals.

Keep checking back as we will be adding more information to the website. We're very excited for our 4th Annual SWFF and can't wait to see what you create!

We are very excited to announce the films selected for the 2012 SWFF. Each year the number of excellent films increases and this year was no exception. Congratulations to all the students who’s work work chosen.

The selection of films is a difficult process that is administered by a number of individuals including professional filmmakers, professors, students and community members.

Each member is tasked with bringing to the discussion their personal expertise to help determine the final selections that will fit in the festival.

A number of elements are considered including the technical achievement evident in the film, the overall content, with consideration to how compelling and original it is and an overall impression that can and may supersede the other two considerations.

Workshops Announced

News about the next SWFF will be announced over the summer.
