ADVISEMENT 101
Before the advising session:
  • Pickup and review the Spring 2005 Course Offering Bulletin which will be available online around October 13th. Hard copies will become available around October 28th in the Registrar's Office. If you live on campus, the COB will be delivered to your dorm address.
  • Review CCC requirements. Your advisor will have a CCC check sheet in your advisement folder, but you can download one for your own planning. You will need Acrobat Reader to open the file.
  • Make a note of courses you have taken which may fulfill CCC requirements to review with your advisor.
  • Have you declared a major? A minor? A concentration? A track? Many departments have requirement checklists pertaining to a specific degree or program. Stop by the appropriate department office for the newest version.
  • Found a course you'd like to take? Next, you need to ask some questions: Is there a prerequisite? Is the section only for majors? Only for non-majors? Does the course require departmental approval? Be sure to examine the last column of the COB listings: ‘Notes/Special Dates' for answers to these questions.
  • Prerequisite! What prerequisite? Time to go to the College Catalog. Course listings include prerequisites and how often the course is apt to be offered.  Not sure where you left the big blue book? No problem. Click on the ‘Course Catalog' link from Fredonia's ‘Students' page.
  • Create the “perfect” schedule – then create three or four optional schedules you can live with.
  • Schedule a time to meet with your advisor. Many advisors post signup sheets on office doors. Be careful not to schedule during a class or shift at work. Talk to your advisor if none of the signup spots are possible for you.
  • Don't know who your advisor is? Contact Academic Advising at 673-3188 or stop by at 2148 Fenton Hall.
  • Don't know where your advisor is? Click on ‘Find it Fast' from the Fredonia home page and then select ‘Faculty/Staff E-mail & Addresses'.
  • It wouldn't be a bad idea to review the General Academic Information and Academic Policies published in the College Catalog.
During the advising session:
  • Come prepared! Bring your COB, your worksheets, any schedules you already have for the Spring semester (sports, jobs, other responsibilities), any questions you have about CCC or other degree requirements, questions about the major, the department, etc.
  • If you have changed your major or declared a major since registering for Fall 2004 classes, it is important to discuss this with your advisor. Don't assume s/he already knows!
  • Obtain your number for web registration. Keep it safe!
  • Review any department or registration deadlines with your advisor.
Before registering:
  • Clear up any holds on your academic record. You will NOT be able to register for Spring semester classes if you have an outstanding amount due on your financial account; have not turned in the necessary health immunization records; paid any outstanding parking fines or library charges. (Enter 'Your Connection' to review any holds on your record.)
  • Don't wait until moments before the deadline to register. Several things can go wrong: Your computer connection goes down. Your PIN number doesn't work. You can't remember the answer to your security question. The class you really, really want is already closed!
BOTTOM LINE: You are the one ultimately responsible for knowing and meeting the academic requirements for your degree.
