Supporting Experienced Students

Many, many Fredonia students either did not start their college careers at Fredonia or did not begin as a recent high school graduate. These students include transfers, both from two or four-year schools, international students, continuing education, part-time, re-entry and other nontraditional students.

The Learning Center recognizes that these “experienced students” are often unaccustomed to the ways and whys of Fredonia. They don’t always feel as connected to the campus as traditional students do.

The traditional Fredonia student who has gone through a two-day orientation, freshman seminars, hall meetings and a semester or more on campus is far more familiar with the events, the jargon, the activities — even the customs of Fredonia

The Learning Center with cooperation from several student services and departments on campus has begun the Supporting Experienced Students program.

The program is new this semester and still in the process of being organized. We would like your help!

What do Fredonia’s experienced students need to feel more connected to the campus community?

A questionnaire has been placed on our SES home page for your input. The site also provides links to pages of special interests to transfers, international students, continuing ed and re-entry students. The pages are still under construction, so let us know what would be helpful.

Here's the link for the questionnaire.

In addition, we offer this inaugural issue of Point of Reference, a newsletter which has been designed especially for Fredonia’s experienced students.

Finally, you are invited to take advantage of the drop-in tutoring hours provided by our CTS tutors. You may even be interested in applying for a position as a tutor. The service is free and there in no need to make an appointment.

Check out our website for more information on all the services and opportunities offered by the Learning Center and the many other student services at Fredonia.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

NEW

The School of Education is now the COLLEGE OF EDUCATION (COE).
This is BIG! The newly structured COE is one of three Colleges at SUNY Fredonia—the other two colleges are the College of Arts & Humanities and the College of Natural and Social Sciences. This is a promotion for Education! We are no longer just a "department" within a college; we are a College in and of ourselves.

Second, all Colleges have their own Deans and COE is no exception. Dr. Christine Givner is the newly appointed Dean of the College of Education. She arrived in Fredonia from California and started as COE Dean on July 1, 2004. She has a background in Special Education and extensive administrative experience.
