Job Description
Program Assistant
Position Data:
Reports to: Summer Program Coordinator Status: Exempt
Position Summary: Program Assistants
are responsible for the general supervision of Upward Bound students
during daily activities. These include, but are not limited to
residence life situations, mealtimes, field trips, guided study,
transporting interns, and evening activities.
Qualifications:
- At least Sophomore standing in college
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively
- Experience working in intense team situations preferred
- Ability to work independently and utilize problem solving skills
- Previous residence life and relevant educational experience
is desirable
- Ability to act as a positive role model for students
- Ability to relate positively and non-judgmentally to students
of diverse backgrounds
Responsibilities:
- Lives in residence hall Sunday evenings through Friday afternoons
- Provides general direction to participants during the summer
program
- Provides supervision of planned activities, including workshops
and field trips
- Assists Summer Program Coordinator with preparation and implementation of evening programs and activities
- Conducts guided study period with Upward Bound students providing
supervision and assistance with portfolio
- Ensures a healthy residential environment, conducting male/female
suite meetings as necessary
- Acts as catalyst for responsible decision making and personal
growth of students
- Enforces Upward Bound and SUNY Fredonia policies in the classrooms,
cafeterias,
recreational/meeting facilities and in any other program related
location
- Identifies students who may need to be referred for counseling
services
- Reports concerns to appropriate supervisor on duty
- Attends meetings and Upward Bound functions as required, including
but not limited to the following:
• one staff training day prior to start of summer program
• staff meetings as scheduled by Summer Program Coordinator
• two evaluation sessions; scheduled for Monday mornings
of 3rd and 6th weeks of program
Additional Responsibilities:
- May be asked to transport Upward Bound students in state vehicle
- Valid New York State driver’s license

Job Description
Summer Instructor
Position Data:
Reports to: Academic Coordinator Status: Exempt
Position Summary: Position is responsible for
providing instruction in core subject areas such as English, mathematics,
science, history, foreign language/culture, reading/writing or
an enrichment course such as music, art, photography, drama, computers,
etc., to Upward Bound students in the summer residential program.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree required with appropriate certification
preferred
2. At least one year of teaching experience or commensurate experience
in the field of expertise
3. Ability to relate to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds
4. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
5. Good knowledge of New York State curricula
Responsibilities:
1. Teach daily over two-weeks of core subject or enrichment course
according to summer schedule
2. May develop academic workshops to enhance and reinforce student
learning
3. Works with other Upward Bound core staff to develop plans for
supportive assistance
4. Maintains appropriate record keeping regarding student performance
and attendance
5. In addition to regular teaching schedule, attends meetings
and all Upward Bound functions as required, including but not
limited to the following:
• one staff training day prior to start of summer program
• summer orientation meeting: first Sunday evening of program
to meet parents & students
• guided study session each day of assigned instruction
• at least one evening of residence life programming during
each week of assigned instruction
• student meetings: 6pm to 7pm Sunday evenings during each
week of assigned instruction
• staff meetings: 12pm to 1pm Friday afternoons during each
week of assigned instruction
Additional Responsibilities:
1. May be asked to transport Upward Bound students in state vehicle
2. Valid New York State driver’s license

Tutor
Position Data:
Reports to: Field Supervisor Status: Non-exempt
Position Summary: Position responsible for providing
academic assistance to Upward Bound students in core curriculum
subject areas.
Qualifications:
1. At least Junior standing in college
2. G.P.A. 3.0 or higher
3. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively
4. Ability to relate to diverse student population
5. Ability to work independently
Responsibilities:
1. Becomes familiar with individual student records in order to
provide targeted academic assistance.
2. Provides feedback to students regarding assignments, work progress,
etc.
3. Maintains contact with home school teachers regarding student
progress, work assignment, etc.
4. Maintains required record keeping regarding student progress
and attendance.
5. Attends meetings and Upward Bound functions as required

1. May be asked to transport Upward Bound students in state vehicle
2. Valid New York State driver’s license
