Take Back the Night

This year, Take Back the Night was co-sponsored by Women’s Student Union and Pride Alliance and took place at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24 in McEven 202.

“Pride Alliance has been helping out with Take Back The Night for one year. Last year was the first year that we were approached by Women’s Student Union (WSU) to help co-sponsor this event. Last year’s Take Back The Night was framed around Gay, Lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) rape and abuse, so WSU thought that Pride Alliance should be involved with this event.

"Pride Alliance co-sponsors this event because it is something that the community at SUNY Fredonia needs to be aware of. We go there to lend our support, talk about the GLBT community, rape, abuse and statistics. The prevalence is high if not higher in the GLBT community and a couple of members in Pride have had stories to tell at this event.

“This event and the walk afterwards is very empowering. When I first went there, I heard many stories of people standing up against those who have raped, or tried to rape and it made me want to fight for those men and women. When people are outside "protesting" against violence, you feed good because you are doing something good for others. I personally feel like I am standing up for those who could not speak out, or stop the things that had happened to them.”

“Take Back the Night is a speak-out against domestic violence and rape followed by a march around campus to eradicate the silence surrounding these issues.  This year, the event will be co-sponsored with Pride Alliance.  This purpose of this co-sponsorship is to raise awareness about how domestic violence and rape are not just heterosexual problems; these issues affect everyone.  Hopefully this co-sponsorship will speak to that."
