Teacher Work Sample (tws)

All students in Education will complete at least one teacher work sample during their program of study as a requisite for graduation. A teacher work sample, quite literally, is a "sample of the work of a teacher." For Initial Educator Preparation Programs, this is accomplished during the year in which candidates engage in student teaching and forms the basis of what they may submit as the Education Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA), a relatively new national performance assessment required for certification in New York State.

Initial Preparation Programs

In the Professional Education Unit, the teacher work sample methodology, modeled in part on the edTPA, is used in early field-based courses. During the year in which students are student teaching, this methodology is professionalized into a portfolio suitable for submitting as the edTPA requirement for certification.

Advanced Programs

In the advanced programs, the teacher work sample methodology is promoted to advanced candidates in developing portfolios of their work as teachers during structured field experiences at the graduate level.
