Originally from Hong Kong, Dr. Kevin Wong was a graduate of John Dewey High School in Brooklyn and completed his studies at Fredonia in the spring of 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He was on the Dean’s List every semester. “While at Fredonia I was totally focused on my work and getting good grades so I could get into med school. I didn’t do too much socializing, which I now see as an important part of undergraduate training,” stated Kevin. “When I came to Fredonia in the fall of 1994, I was a cooperative engineering major but changed to biology to better prepare myself for medical school. EDP staff members were my friends. They were caring and supportive and a great help.” After Fredonia, Kevin went to the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine for a year of master’s work in biomedical sciences and then on to medical school where he is now a member of the graduating class of 2003 and will be starting his four-year residency in anesthesia in Brooklyn. “My mother, brother, sister-in-law, and two nephews live in Brooklyn so it will be nice to be back home.” While having no free time during his first two years of med school, Kevin now finds time to snow board in the winter. He also takes drum lessons and is an active participant in his church and works with their inner city mission. “It was here in Philly that God opened my eyes to see who He really is. Throughout my childhood in Hong Kong I was anti-Christian. Growing up in Brooklyn made me rough and tough. I forgot what it meant to be nice. In the past four years God turned me back into a human being again. God has been tremendously gracious to me and has sustained me through these years of medical training. One of my future goals is to work with overseas missions.” This quote is one that Dr. Wong refers to readily, “Obstacles are things a person sees when he takes his eyes off his goals.” Obviously, Kevin has kept his eyes on his goals and continues to strive to go “Above and Beyond.”
