SUNY Press to publish Nelson's book on Rt. 20

Distinguished Teaching Professor of English Malcolm Nelson is currently working on an anecdotal study of the longest highway in the United States. It is this road, U.S. 20, which he takes to work every day, and indeed, offers him an exceptionally personal vista of human traffic going east or west as it passes by the front door of his home in Brocton, N.Y. SUNY Press has selected Dr. Nelson's book, Twent West: The Great Road Across America, as one of its books to be published in 2007. Dr. Malcolm Nelson

Site for High Tech Incubator to be announced

SUNY Fredonia and the City of Dunkirk will jointly hold a News Conference on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. to announce the site location for the SUNY Fredonia High Tech Incubator. The news conference will be held on the vacant lot on Central Avenue in Dunkirk, N.Y., between Second and Third Streets.

Homecoming Weekend will bring back the best

Outstanding Achievement Awards The Alumni Association will honor three stellar graduates this weekend, as Fredonia celebrates its annual Homecoming Weekend. The Outstanding Achievement Awards will be given Saturday at a luncheon to Rocco Piscatello ‘90 (graphic design), Andrea Romano '77 (theatre arts), and David Salamone ’79 (Interdisciplinary Studies – Radio and Television). Romano Salamone Piscatello Communication's 25th AnniversaryThe Communication Department kicks off its 25th anniversary on Friday with a panel discussion on careers by some stellar alumni in the afternoon, and a reception following. The department, its former faculty, current students and alumni will continue to celebrate throughout Saturday, capping their memory-building weekend with a light buffet dinner in Reed Library and a benefit concert by the TRIPJACKS, (American roots music). Professor Emeritus John Malcolm, ’61 and Linda Malcolm ’60 are sponsoring the evening. Alumnus Charles Fisher ’62 and former Professor Emeritus and singer/songwriter Dan Berggren will be appearing. Tickets are $20 and available through the Alumni Office (673-3553). Tom Prevet to be inducted into Hall of FameMore alumni are being honored Saturday night during the Athletic Hall of Fame inductions. Honored this year are Joseph Caso '97 (baseball), Todd Grady '99 (track), Kristi (Buntich) Wiley ‘93 (soccer), and former coach (both soccer and baseball), professor, and Athletic Director, Thomas Prevet. Information sessions on social work degree

Information on the SUNY Fredonia bachelor’s degree in Social Work will be presented twice in November for all prospective students, especially those who hold an associate’s degree or are interested in studying part-time. The Social Work program at Fredonia is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and has been in existence since 1997.

Concerts for kids start Saturday

Selected student ensembles from the Fredonia School of Music will perform four, half-hour Children’s Concerts on Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m. starting Oct. 28 in the multi-purpose room of the Chautauqua County Home in Dunkirk. Planned with the help of Fredonia faculty who are experts in music and education, the concerts will introduce very young audiences (from infants to 6 year-olds) to musical instruments.

Out of the Darkness Community Walk set for Oct. 14

The Psychology Club and Office of Volunteer and Community Services will sponsor the Out of the Darkness Community Walk for Suicide Prevention on Saturday, Oct. 14. The walk will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s research, prevention and support projects.

CEASE program provides training and education

A new round of funding from the U.S. Justice Department will allow SUNY Fredonia officials to provide rape prevention training for university police, athletic coaches, and key campus personnel while increasing similar programs for incoming freshmen, upperclassmen and transfer students. The $199,996 expands the Campus Education, Awareness, Support and Effect (CEASE) project , which was originally subsidized with a $200,000 Department of Justice grant in 2004.

Fredonia village named best urban center

In a recent study conducted by Business First, a Buffalo business newspaper, the quaint, southern tier village was ranked the most favorable urban center in which to live in Western New York. Within the region’s eight counties, every village, town, and city meeting the population criteria was considered in the periodical’s search for exceptional communities.
