A concert honoring Roland Dyens, a world-class guitarist, composer and teacher ̶ and generous friend of Fredonia’s Guitar program ̶ will be held on Thursday, March 23, 8 p.m., in Rosch Recital Hall. Mr. Dyens’ unexpected passing in late 2016 shocked the classical guitar community that had regarded him as one of its most creative, inspiring and vivacious free spirits.
The Fredonia School of Music has invited 10 gifted, young pianists to campus to compete in the Final Round of the Claudette Sorel Piano Competition, slated to take place on Sunday, Feb. 26, beginning at noon in Rosch Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
A bigger “help wanted” sign could easily be posted at the Williams Center for the Job and Internship Expo to be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2 to 5 p.m. New this year will be a Summer Job Expo, in G103 BC, which will be staffed by approximately 20 employers focusing on summer jobs. The annual Job and Internship Expo returns to its home in the Multipurpose Room. Both events are free and open to current students and Fredonia alumni.
Welcome Week includes activities designed to exercise body and mind, all hosted by Spectrum Entertainment Board and sponsored by the Student Association. Activities Night is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 25 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Steele Hall Fieldhouse. Over 170 clubs will come together on one night! Join the fun!
Fredonia’s Department of Mathematical Sciences is celebrating its 15th Pi Day on Wednesday, March 8, from 6 to 8 p.m., in McEwen Hall Room 209. Over a dozen teams will compete for the coveted Pi Cup. All are welcome to attend.
The Department of Athletics and Recreation will commemorate the 31st annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day at Steele Hall on Saturday, Jan. 28, in conjunction with men’s and women’s basketball games and a men’s and women’s varsity swimming and diving meet. Free t-shirts celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day will be given out, while supplies last, to those attending the Battle of the Lake Series basketball doubleheader with SUNY Buffalo State. Tip-off for the men’s game is 4 p.m., with the women’s game to follow at 6 p.m.
The inaugural Claudette Sorel Piano Competition, an event designed to celebrate the creativity and excellence of young pianists, will be held by the School of Music in February 2017. The application deadline has been extended to Jan. 22. Named in honor of the late SUNY Distinguished Professor and Fredonia Professor Emeritus Claudette Sorel, the competition is generously supported by the Sorel Organization and offers a $2,500 cash first prize and $1,500 in additional prize money.
Registration is underway for the second annual Fredonia Bass Fest on Saturday, Feb. 11, a day devoted to performances and classes for double bass players of all levels – professional, college, high school, teacher and adult learner – at the Fredonia School of Music. Also part of the event, is a double bass solo competition that will provide performance opportunities, cash prizes, scholarship money and additional prizes to high school players.
