Dr. Jessica Akey, Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication, and Dr. Najia Aarim-Heriot, Associate Professor of the Department of History, have been selected to participate in the 2013 CIEE International Faculty Development Seminars. SUNY Fredonia’s VPAA/Provost has funded faculty participation in these seminars for the past three years.
Using examples from the American stage repertoire, Dr. Jessica Hillman has written a book that examines how the Holocaust resonated in popular musicals, and traces changing American attitudes towards it over the years. Through the book, Dr. Hillman has done pioneer analysis on the intersection of musical theatre and the difficulties of Holocaust representation in entertainment.

Graduate and undergraduate biology majors who won research awards this past summer will present the findings of their plant and animal studies on Friday, Oct. 19, starting at 3 p.m. in Jewett 101. The summer research program for SUNY Fredonia biology majors is supported by the Fredonia College Foundation with gifts from the Holmberg Foundation of Jamestown, N.Y., Constantine Barker Foundation, Dr. Robert Wettingfeld Undergraduate Research Award and Biology Endowment Fund. Each fall, the department welcomes donors and guests to hear the results of the student work.
Dr. Andrew Cullison, assistant professor of Philosophy, is editor of the new book, The Continuum Companion to Epistemology, published in July by academic publisher Continuum, a Bloomsbury Company. The book is intended to be the definitive guide to a key area of contemporary philosophy, and covers all the fundamental questions asked by epistemology. Cullison also contributed to the volume.
Recently, Dr. Bond Benton was awarded a contract with the U.S. State Department to develop a training program for advocacy, persuasion, and presentation skills for the U.S. Embassy in London. The project will also include sponsored research on identifying culturally appropriate messaging strategies for Foreign Service Officers and facilitating programming with Embassy leaders.
"The Other Town," a documentary film by SUNY Fredonia Communication professor Nefin Dinc, won “Best Historical Documentary” honors at the 2012 Greek Film Fest Chicago. The film explores how prevailing citizen beliefs and government policies can foster prejudices that perpetuate conflict between Turkey and Greece.
Producer, engineer, composer and musician Armand Petri, head of the SUNY Fredonia's Music Business program, was one of 12 people into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame on Oct. 4. Working with artists such as the Goo Goo Dolls, 10,000 Maniacs, and Sixpence None the Richer, Petri’s accolades include several gold and platinum records, a Dove Award, and song placement in television and film.
A new “SUNY Smart Track Campaign” to combat student debt throughout New York and set a national model has been created by SUNY and is being piloted at SUNY Fredonia. Smart Track is said to be the most proactive, comprehensive approach by any university system in the U.S. to address a growing national concern about a lack of transparency as it relates to college costs and financial aid, and the amount of federal loan debt accumulated by college students.
