Fredonia grad Rachel Niegelberg lands a spot in 'Jeopardy! Teachers Tournament'
She grew up in Nesconset, in downstate New York, earned a Mus.B. in Music Education in 2010 at Fredonia and, in March, achieved her “life dream” of becoming a contestant on “Jeopardy!” On Tuesday, May 8, Ms. Niegelberg goes head-to-head with two contestants in the "Jeopardy! Teachers Tournament."
Fredonia to screen documentary that explores suicide, offers help to heal
A showing of “Suicide: The Ripple Effect,” a documentary that focuses on the devastating effects of suicide and tremendous positive ripple effects of advocacy, inspiration and hope that are helping millions to heal and stay alive, will be held at Fredonia on Wednesday, May 2, at 4:30 p.m., at the Science Center’s Kelly Family Auditorium.
Fredonia to host GLOBE students
Fredonia will be hosting students of the Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program on Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is slated for the Adam’s Mark hotel in Buffalo.
Gender/social change symposium set for May
The Women’s and Gender Studies’ annual Gender and Social Change Symposium will be held on Wednesday, May 2, from 5 to 7 p.m., in Williams Center Room S204-E. The symposium will feature program awards, presentations by the Gender Research Award winner(s) and poster presentations by Women's and Gender Studies students based on their capstone research projects.
Award-winning children’s author Sarah Thomson visits to discuss work
Award-winning children’s author Sarah Thomson is slated to speak at Fredonia on Wednesday, April 25. Ms. Thomson will present the talk, “Deadly Flowers: Girls, Ninjas, and Using History to Create Fiction,” based on her 2016 novel, “Deadly Flowers,” in the Science Center’s Kelly Family Auditorium (Room 105) at 4:30 p.m.
Student Business Competition completed at incubator
The Fredonia Technology Incubator recently conducted the final pitches for its Third Student Business Competition for Fredonia students. After deliberation, a panel of independent judges announced the winners and top prize went to John McIvor and his startup WEIRDNESS.
Recital series continues at Reed Library
The next event in the Noontime at Reed monthly recital series is slated for Friday, April 27, at noon, in the Garden at Reed Library. The campus and community is invited to attend the free recital.
Walking toward autism awareness and supporting a great cause
The “Lend a Paw for Autism: Star Paws” dog walk hosted April 22 by students from the Music Industry program’s Hail! Fredonia Records raised approximately $4,500 from registration, basket raffles, food sales and online donations for the Institute for Autism Research at Canisius College.
Fredonia shines on Kids Day
On Tuesday, April 24, Fredonia students and staff, along with students from Dunkirk High School, took to the streets to sell special editions of The Buffalo News as part of the Buffalo News Kids Day.
School of Music alumna a Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Grand Finals
Fredonia alumna and soprano Danielle Beckvermit was named a Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Grand Finals, representing the Eastern Region. This is the second consecutive year that a Fredonia School of Music graduate has reached the Finals of the Metropolitan Opera National Council competition. Alumnus Kyle van Schoonhoven was a winner in the 2017 Grand Finals.
