Governmental Scholarships

Governmental Scholarships

The US government, as well as other foreign governments, offer students wishing to study abroad opportunities to apply for funding.  Students are strongly encouraged to meet with the Office of International Education if they wish to apply for governmental scholarships.  In many cases, the Office of International Education offers workshops or webinars on how to apply to these scholarships.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

The Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship program awards students studying abroad for a semester, summer, or academic year.  The program, which awards up to $5,000 to each student, is meant especially for students with limited financial means and aims to diversify study abroad.  To be eligible, students must receive the Federal Pell Grant, be a US citizen, and be accepted to/applying for study in a country that is not on the US State Department Travel Warning List.   Students wishing to study a critical need language can win an additional $3,000 to support language study.

Fredonia students are especially encouraged to apply for the Gilman, as about 35% of Fredonians receive the Pell Grant as part of their financial aid award.  The Office of International Education holds Gilman workshops early in each semester to support students as they apply for the scholarship.
