Message from the Chairperson

The greatest strengths of the English Department at Fredonia are our faculty and our diverse course offerings. As scholar-teachers, we pride ourselves on our ability to combine exciting classroom learning experiences with challenging research agendas. Our faculty support the world literature core, as well as a rich selection of author and period courses, and courses in criticism, film, and cultural studies. Our pedagogy team leads students through a certification program that is unparalleled for its breadth of preparation in courses devoted to the teaching of writing, adolescent literature, literacy and technology, the reading process, and general methods in English Language Arts. We train future teachers through initial and advanced certification programs. Our creative writing faculty members guide future writers as they consider careers in writing and publishing.

I'm consistently amazed by how people who teach so much and so well, also maintain such active scholarly agendas. Fredonia faculty publish interesting books, articles, poems, and fiction; edit archival works and journals; attend conferences regularly in their fields, and give talks on campus; support engaged scholarship in the community; and stay informed of and contribute to the most recent scholarship in pedagogy. These combined skills have garnered national and regional writing awards, local community grants, Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Teaching, Research and Creative Activities, as well as Distinguished Professorships.

Our graduate students have the benefit of a newly structured program that is tailored to the individual needs of our M.A. and M.A. in English 7-12 professional certification degree candidates. Focusing on a scaffolded system of directed studies and advanced research, each degree candidate at Fredonia will study one-on-one with faculty in their chosen areas of research, and develop a traditional thesis, action research thesis, professional publication, or a comprehensive examination. Our faculty are excited to support the endeavors of our graduate students as they consider careers in education, writing, law, non-profit management, library sciences, and student personnel administration.

Our faculty support numerous interdisciplinary programs on campus, such as African American Studies, American Studies, American Indian Studies, Film Studies, the Honors Program, Multiethnic Studies, and Women's Studies. They take students to professional conferences in writing and pedagogy, and lead study programs in London, Turkey, and New York City.

Faculty in the Department of English also work closely advising students who are writing honors and M.A. theses and other capstone research projects, and student groups such as the Writers' Ring, English Works, and Sigma Tau Delta—our English Honor Society—as well as campus student groups including the Black Student Union and Hillel/Jewish Student Union.

The Department of English at Fredonia is an exciting place to teach and to learn.
