Lindsey Wittmeyer Featured in Local Business Newspaper

Fredonia Medical Technology junior Lindsey Wittmeyer was featured in the article “Seeking Talent” in the August 27th edition of Buffalo Business First, Western New York’s business newspaper. The article discussed the increasing need for health care professionals in the WNY region, and focused on Lindsey’s summer employment at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. As a project coordinator in the Pathology department, Lindsey prepared bone marrow samples for screening and interpretation by licensed medical technologists, and also performed computer data entry. “I’ve always been interested in medicine and I love the medical careers,” she said. “I will keep working while I’m at school, coming in on Fridays, to stay on payroll and hopefully make the connection for an internship senior year.”

The article went on to discuss the increasing demand for clinical laboratory scientists, laboratory managers, nurses, medical imaging technicians and other health care professionals. Patricia Astry, Fredonia Biology Department Chair and Director of Medical Technology was quoted as saying, “Demand (for clinical laboratory scientists) is very high….We typically are receiving requests from throughout the tri-state area: Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York and sometimes we hear from New England as well. It’s a strong job market.” Student interest in the field of clinical laboratory science is following suit. In 2008, only two Fredonia Medical Technology students were enrolled in clinical internships; this year twelve Medical Technology students will be applying for internships.
