Student options for voting in the general election

Lisa Eikenburg

On Tuesday, Nov. 6, citizens of New York State will be choosing a governor, a U.S. Senator, all their members of the U.S. House of Representatives, and all members of the New York State Senate and Assembly. A sheriff will also be elected in Chautauqua County.

Students have two ways to vote in the general election: by mailing an absentee ballot to their home county board of elections or by registering and voting in person in Fredonia.

To vote absentee, a student must:

  • apply for an absentee ballot by downloading an application from their county board of elections’ website click here for more information
  • return the filled-out application form by U.S. mail by Oct. 30 (stamps can be purchased in the bookstore or the credit union at the Williams Center)
  • receive a paper ballot by U.S. Mail, fill it out
  • mail ballot back so that it’s postmarked by Nov. 5

To vote in Fredonia in-person a student must:

  • register to vote by Oct. 12 listing their Fredonia address as the "Address Where You Live" on the voter registration form (registration forms are available on campus in the Campus Life Office in the Williams Center and on the seventh floor of Maytum Hall - Room 702)
  • vote any time from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 6 at the Wheelock School on Chestnut Street — transportation will be provided from the Williams Center to the Wheelock School and back between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. The Wheelock School is also within walking distance from campus.
