Admission to Candidacy Requirements & Procedures

Mathematics Adolescence Education (7-12)

Mathematics Middle Childhood Education (5-9)

 

First Time Freshmen

  • Students are admitted as Freshmen majors in Mathematics Middle Childhood Education or Mathematics Adolescence Education if they have met the admission criteria of the university and have evidence of SAT or ACT exam completion.
  • Admission may be Unconditional or Conditional (see below).
  • Students enroll in MAED 105/106 in the Fall semester of their Freshman year.
  • After completion of MAED 105/106, students enroll in MAED 276 .

Unconditional Admission:

  • Successful completion of MAED 105
  • Successful completion of MAED 276
  • Overall GPA ≥ 3.0
  • Positive Dispositions

Conditional Admission:

  • Overall GPA ≥ 2.75
  • Combined GPA ≥ 3.0 in
    • MAED 105/106
    • EDU 224
    • EDU250/251
    • MAED 276
  • Positive Dispositions

Admissions Procedures:

  1. Program faculty make the application and portfolio requirements available to students during MAED 105/106.
  2. The application and portfolio are submitted to Dr. Keary Howard, any time before enrolling in MAED 305/313 (restricted to candidates).
  3. Applications and portoflios are reviewed at the end of each semester during screening, and applicants are notified of candidacy decision at that time.
  4. An applicant may apply an unlimited number of times.  However, more than one application denial will result in redirection to other program options.
  5. The program coordinator submits lists of students identified as fully accepted, conditionally accepted, or denied to the College of Education Associate Dean, who then submits data to Banner identifying students' candidacy status.
  6. The following courses are restricted to candidates:  MAED 305/313, MAED 310, MATH 405, MAED 410, MAED 416, MAED 428, MAED 429, MAED 430, MAED 431

 

Transfers

  • Students will be admitted as Transfers in Mathematics Middle Childhood Education or Mathematics Adolescence Education if they have UG GPA ≥ 3.0 and evidence of SAT, ACT, or GRE exam completion.

External Transfers:

  • If GPA ≥ 3.0, then applicant is Unconditionally Admitted to Candidacy; this information is sent to the College of Education Associate Dean and then to Banner.
  • If GPA < 3.0, then applicant is Denied Admission; this information is sent to the College of Education Associate Dean and then to Banner.

Internal Transfers:

  • Must apply in the department. Complete application when submitting request to transfer.
  • GPA must be ≥ 3.0 to be Unconditionally Accepted; this information is sent to the College of Education Associate Dean and then to Banner.
  • If GPA < 3.0, then applicant is Denied Admission; this information is sent to the College of Education Associate Dean and then to Banner.
