What is FERPA?

FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974) is a federal law that protects students’ educational records, gives the right to have the record amended, and the right to limited disclosure of personally identifiable information found in those educational records. If a student is attending a postsecondary institution - at any age - the rights under FERPA have transferred to the student.

When do FERPA rights begin?

A student’s FERPA rights begin when they register at SUNY Fredonia, regardless of their age. Students who apply but are denied admission or students who were accepted but never attended are NOT covered under FERPA. FERPA covers students in attendance at Fredonia as long as that student is living.

What are education records?

Education records are maintained by an educational institution (or a party acting for the institution) that contain information directly related to a student. Examples include enrollment records, grades, financial records (applications for scholarships financial aid reports, student account information), and information in BANNER.
