Requests we accommodate

  • Students participating in hands-on learning, research, or internships
  • Photoshoots set up prior to major events to promote to current or prospective students
  • Environmental marketing shoots of students interacting around campus

Requests we do not accommodate

  • Group photos, or other images easily taken with a phone that are not usable in marketing
  • Photos in classrooms, conferences, or workshops in which participants are not actively engaged
  • Photos of people, events, or programs that don’t support recruitment or fundraising

When a Release Form is Typically Required:

  • Minors: Always obtain a signed release for photos involving minors.
  • Specific student activities: If students are photographed in specific locations for non-photo purposes (e.g., studying in a library), consent is needed.
  • Privacy-expectant areas: Obtain consent in private spaces such as health facilities.

When a Release Form is Typically Not Required:

  • Public events: no release is needed for public events (e.g., sports, festivals).
  • Public spaces: photographs taken in general campus areas or during events where there’s no expectation of privacy.
  • A person grants permission to be photographed, with full knowledge of where, when, how, and for what purpose the photographs will be used, and with the understanding that they can say “no” without consequence.
