Dr. Birger Vanwesenbeeck
Professor Birger Vanwesenbeeck’s monograph has been published as part of SUNY Press’s “Literature…in Theory” book series.
The Department of English faculty member’s publication is titled, “Mourning After Freud: Hypertranslation, Theory, Literature.”
The monograph is the result of over a decade of research and teaching on the relationship of language and literature to loss. The author notes that “Mourning After Freud” offers a new approach to Freud’s well-known conception of mourning while showing, provocatively, that the true heirs of this model are to be found not in psychoanalysis or trauma theory but in contiguous fields such as deconstruction, African American writing, and second-generation U.S. immigrant literature.
University of Georgia Professor Roland Végső, author of “Worldlessness After Heidegger: Phenomenology, Psychoanalysis, Deconstruction,” called Dr. Vanwesenbeeck’s book “fresh and compelling” and “an innovative contribution to discussions of mourning and translation.” More information about the book may be found online.
