The State University of New York at Fredonia has appointed Julie Gorlewski, Ph.D., as its next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, President Stephen H. Kolison Jr. announced.

Dr. Gorlewski currently serves as the Klara and Larry Silverstein Dean of the School of Education at Hunter College. As provost, she will serve as SUNY Fredonia’s chief academic officer, overseeing academic programs, faculty affairs and initiatives that advance teaching, scholarship and student success.

“Dr. Gorlewski brings an exceptional record of academic leadership and a deep commitment to the transformative power of education,” President Kolison said. “Her career has been defined by strengthening academic programs, supporting faculty excellence and preparing students to meet the challenges of a changing world. I am confident she will help lead Fredonia’s academic enterprise with the vision, collaboration and integrity needed to advance our mission.”

“I am honored to be joining the Fredonia community and grateful for the opportunity to serve as provost,” Dr. Gorlewski said. “I look forward to working with President Kolison, faculty, staff and students to build on the university’s strong tradition of academic excellence and meaningful impact. Education has the power to transform lives, and together we will continue to fulfill that promise for our students and the communities they serve.”

At Hunter College, Dr. Gorlewski oversees programs and research focused on improving the lives of learners and communities through education. Her career has emphasized connecting theory and practice in education while preparing students to engage meaningfully in civic life.

Dr. Gorlewski earned a Ph.D. in Social Foundations of Education and an Ed.M. in Elementary Education from the University at Buffalo. She completed her B.S. in Secondary English Education at SUNY Buffalo State University.

Before joining Hunter College, she served as professor and senior associate dean for teacher education and academic affairs in the Graduate School of Education at the University at Buffalo. She has also served as chair of the Department of Teaching and Learning at Virginia Commonwealth University and as a faculty member in Secondary Education at the State University of New York at New Paltz.

Dr. Gorlewski is a widely published scholar whose work focuses on instructional practice, teacher education, and educational policy. She previously served as co-editor, with her husband, David, of English Journal, the flagship publication of the National Council of Teachers of English.

President Kolison said Dr. Gorlewski joins Fredonia at an important moment as the university continues efforts to strengthen its academic programs and position the institution for long-term success.

“As Fredonia continues to build a strong and sustainable future, we need an academic leader who can inspire trust, foster collaboration and guide innovation across our programs,” President Kolison said. “Dr. Gorlewski’s experience and commitment to student learning make her exceptionally well suited to help lead the university into its next chapter.”

She will begin at SUNY Fredonia in July.
