Lauren Henning, bassoonist, and Allison Dana, oboist, have been chosen as winners of the School of Music’s Concerto Competition, which is held every year to select the “cream of the crop” among music students at SUNY Fredonia.

The winners will present solo performances of their concerto with a major student ensemble during the spring semester.

Ms. Henning is a senior Music Education major from Eden, and student in the studio of Associate Professor of Bassoon Laura Koepke. She performed the Concerto in F, Movement II Adagio and Movement III Rondo: Allegro, by Carl Maria von Weber. Henning will perform with the Fredonia Chamber Orchestra.

Ms. Dana is a senior majoring in Music Education and Music Performance from Stony Brook, and a student in the studio of Professor of Oboe Sarah Hamilton. She performed Concerto for Oboe and Small Orchestra, Movement II Poco Andante and Movement III Poco Allegro,” by Bohuslav Martinu. Dana will perform with the College Symphony Orchestra.

“Congratulations are due to all the competitors, each who gave strong performances with a great deal of skill and grace, especially given all the variables and handicaps of our current situation,” said Dr. Hamilton, who is also chair of the Performance area.

The two winners were selected by School of Music faculty from among 11 student musicians who were selected to perform in the competition, held in King Concert Hall on Aug. 30 and was live streamed.
