Requirements for the Interdisciplinary Studies Minor in Public Health

Hours: The PH minor requires successful completion of 19 credit hours (minimum 2.0 GPA in PH courses).

Courses: Six credits must be from 300-400 level courses. Only 6 credits may be taken in a student’s academic major (e.g., BIOL).

Prerequisites: Some courses have prerequisites and/or require department permission to enroll.

Sequencing: SOC215 Introduction to Public Health should be completed early, preferably during sophomore year, and as soon as possible after declaring the PH minor.

Specialties: Based on individual interests, one or more elective courses from Specialties can be selected. Some Specialty groupings are shown (e.g., Women’s Health). Additional courses can be selected from the Biosciences and Social Behavioral Sciences areas to create an individualized specialty. All specialties must conform to the above requirements.

1. Public Health Core -- 10 credit hours required

  • SOC215 Introduction to Public Health
  • BIOL 110 Human Biology or BIOL111 Introduction to Biology or BIOL133 Principles of Biology II
  • SO300/PSY210/COMM295 Research Methods or BIOL457Biostatistics (or STAT250 for BIOL majors)
  • SOC415 Seminar in Public Health (1 cr. Internship – requires 15 hrs. completed PH coursework, including SOC215)
