When does it begin?
In the fall of 2004.

To whom does it apply?
It would apply ONLY to those students who complete the BA. It would apply to freshmen who enroll in 2004 or later and to transfer students who enroll in fall 2006 or later.

(A) Students must fulfill the learning outcomes of the Foreign Language Requirement, CCC Category 3 (6 Credits) by at least one of the following:

  1. Satisfactorily completing 2 appropriate 3-credit foreign language courses in the same language at Fredonia.
  2. Transferring an appropriate 6 credit hours in the same foreign language from another qualified institution of higher learning.
  3. Students may fulfill the entire six-hour foreign language requirement through either Advanced Placement Examinations (AP), or the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), if they receive:
    1. a score of 3 or higher on the AP test in foreign language,
    2. a score of 50 or higher on the CLEP exam.
  4. Earning a score of 85 or higher on a foreign language Regents Checkpoint B exam.
  5. Satisfactorily completing an appropriate 6 credits of American Sign Language (ASL) course at Fredonia or transferring an appropriate 6 credits of ASL coursework from another qualified institution of higher education, ONLY IF the student is enrolled in a program leading to certification in elementary or secondary education, or programs leading to careers where there is likely to be significant contact with the hearing-impaired (e.g. Early Childhood Education, Childhood Education, Childhood Inclusive Education, Middle Childhood Education, Adolescence Education, Music Education, Communication Disorders and Sciences, Health, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology).

(B) The Modern Language department will use its best professional judgment in determining when students have fulfilled the learning outcomes of the foreign language requirement in ways other than those sketched above. Moreover, under appropriate circumstances, waivers of the requirement will be granted by the director of general education after consultation with the department.

(C) The Modern Language department recognizes that students cannot fulfill the learning outcomes of the foreign language requirement, nor may the director of general education waive the requirement, solely on the basis of coursework completed in secondary school.

(D) Students will be placed in the level of language course appropriate to their performance on prior coursework, if any.


* "Modern Languages" and "Foreign Languages" are synonyms herein. While Fredonia uses the former, the SUNY Provost's office uses the latter.
