Voter Registration in New York State
Eligible New York residents can register to vote online, by mail, or in person.
Register at Home or at School?
College students may choose where to register to vote. If you consider your college address your residence, you may be eligible to register using that address. You may instead remain registered at your permanent home address. In New York State, voters must have lived in the state and the county, city, or village where they register for at least 30 days before the election and cannot claim the right to vote elsewhere.
Your registration address determines the races and ballot questions you vote on and where you vote. If you register using your school address, you vote based on that residence. If you remain registered at your permanent address, you vote based on that residence and may need to make plans to vote there or use an available mail-voting option.
