Fredonia students will have several opportunities to register to vote and get answers to their voting questions on campus in October.
The American Democracy Project (ADP), in partnership with the League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County, will host voter registration tables outside Cranston Marche from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6, Thursday, Oct. 8, Thursday, Oct. 15 and Friday, Oct. 16.
Students can stop by to register to vote or ask questions about the voting process.
Representatives can help students learn more about registering to vote using their Fredonia or home address, updating an existing voter registration, requesting a mail ballot, voting while away from home, and other options for casting a ballot.
The deadline to register to vote in New York for the Nov. 3 General Election is Oct. 24.
Eligible New York residents may register online through the New York State Board of Elections, in person at a county board of elections, or by submitting a voter registration form by mail.
To register in New York State, an individual must be a U.S. citizen; be at least 18 years old to vote (16- and 17-year-olds may preregister); have been a resident of New York and their county, city or village for at least 30 days before the election; and meet the state’s other voter eligibility requirements.
Students who are already registered are encouraged to check their voter registration status and make sure their address and other information are current.
New York State voters also have several options for casting their ballot. Early voting will take place Oct. 24 through Nov. 1. Voters may also be eligible to vote by absentee ballot, and New York registered voters may request an early mail ballot. For the Nov. 3 General Election, mailed and online requests for early mail and absentee ballots must be received by Oct. 24; voters may apply in person through Nov. 2.
Students can register to vote, check their registration status, find their polling place, request a mail ballot, and access other official voting information through the New York State Board of Elections at elections.ny.gov.
The voter registration tables are part of Fredonia’s American Democracy Project’s ongoing efforts to provide students with nonpartisan civic engagement and voter education opportunities.
