An article by Dr. Shahin Mehdipour Ataee presenting a software method to automatically detect periodicity in video footage was published.

Computer Magazine, the flagship publication of the IEEE Computer Society, accepted the article in November 2025 and published the article, "Detecting Periodic Patterns in Semi-repetitive Video Footage with Analysis and Comparison,” on March 31.

In this work, Dr. Ataee, a faculty member in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, proposes a complete framework for automatically detecting periodic changes in video streams, with applications in smart surveillance systems and intelligent video compression.

The research also analyzes and compares multiple image-similarity functions and automatic period-detection methods to identify the most lightweight approach that delivers the highest performance.

Ataee’s research builds on his prior work from April 2025 with Jackson L. Osborne-Coy, a 2025 graduate who had majors in Physics and Industrial Management, as well as earlier work from November 2022 with Henry Zelenak, a 2023 graduate who majored in Sound Recording Technology and had a minor in Computer Science.

The IEEE Computer Society publishes peer-reviewed articles written for and by professionals representing the full spectrum of computing technology from hardware to software and from current research to new applications.
