Devils drop wild one, 18-17

Johnny Genau scored five runs.

The Fredonia State baseball team dropped an 18-17 game to New Paltz on Saturday. The two teams combined for four Grand Slams, 25 walks, and 25 hits. With the Devils up three in the ninth, New Paltz hit the final Slam of the game for the walk-off win.

Ryan Hann led the Devils with four hits, all doubles, and had three RBI. Tyler Phillips had three hits and scored four times. Johnny Genau was 2-3 with three walks and scored five runs. Brian Chatt and Pat Bigham both drove in four runs, with Bigham knocking in all four on a home run.

The Devils scored a pair of runs in the top of the first. Phillips led off the game with a hit. Genau then walked. Phillips scored the first run coming all the way around from second on a wild pitch. Genau came around to score on an error by the pitcher.

The Hawks got a two-out Grand Slam by New Paltz' Dean Stalzer. All four runs were unearned due to the leadoff batter reaching on an error.

The Devils scored two in the top of the third to tie the game. Genau doubled and reached third on a ground out. A sacrifice fly by  Chatt scored him. Hann hit an RBI double after a two-out walk to Luke Kenyon to make it 4-4.

The Hawks bounced back with three in the bottom of the third. 

The Devils offense exploded for four runs in the fourth courtesy of Bigham's Grand Slam. 

After a New Paltz run in the fifth to tie the game at 8-all, the Devils tacked on four more in the sixth. With Phillips at third and Genau at second, the Hawks intentionally walked Bigham to load the bases. Chatt produced an RBI groundout for the second out of the inning. A wild pitch scored Genau. Bigham scored when Kenyon reached on an error. Hann doubled home Kenyon to put the Devils up, 12-8.

The teams traded runs in the seventh. The Devils scored when Phillips drove home Burnie Jonis with a single, making it 13-9.

Five eighth-inning runs put New Paltz back in the driver's seat, leading 14-13.

Devils scored four runs in an inning for the third time in the game in the top of the ninth. An error, walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases. Chatt hit a two-run single and advanced to second on the throw home. An intentional walk loaded the bases. Hann lifted a sacrifice fly to center, and Ethan Blaisdell singled home the 17th run of the game for the Devils.

In the bottom of the ninth, a walk, hit by pitch and single loaded the bases. New Paltz' Stalzer then hit his third Grand Slam of the game for the walk-off winner.

The Devils are now 10-15 overall, and 1-10 in the SUNYAC. They returned to the field Monday with a makeup game vs. Oneonta at Finger Lakes C.C.

The 4 x 100 relay team of Cameron Sample, Jordan Lockett, Jacob Winn, and Nick Marsowicz set a new Fredonia State outdoor record, finishing the race in 42.19 seconds. It was a regional-qualifying time, and .17 seconds behind the first-place Cortland team.

For the fourth time in four tries, pole vaulter Cara Pellechia can call herself a SUNYAC Champion. Pellechia cleared 3.50m to take the outdoor title at the SUNYAC Meet on Friday.

Riding the steady right arm of senior Emily Chelius, the Fredonia State softball team claimed a 6-2 win in Game 1 of its doubleheader at Buffalo State and qualified for the SUNYAC Tournament.
