Devils rally past Bethany

Down two sets to none against Bethany (W.Va.), the Fredonia women's volleyball team rallied back for a 3-2 victory and salvaged a split at the Penn State Behrend Invitational on Friday. They fell 3-0 to Mount Union to open play.

Bethany took the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-22.Led by Christie Ackendorf (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home), Emily Jones (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic), and Emma Booth (Hamburg/Frontier), the Fredonia State offense rallied 25-20, 25-22, and 15-9.

"We have been playing some strong competition," said head coach Geoff Braun "and our focus is getting better every set. We did that today and now have a big win to show for it."

Ackendorf led the way with 12 kills, and Jones and Booth had 10 apiece while combining for nine of the Devil's 18 service aces. Kourtney Krchniak (Lockport/Lockport) had 49 assists. Sierra Keim (Shinglehouse, Pa./Portville) had 16 digs.

In the opening match, Mount Union downed the Devils 25-11, 25-15, and 25-10. Jones and Booth led the Devils with four kills. Krchniak had 23 assists and Keim had 15 digs. 

The Devils (2-4) play two more matches tomorrow, taking on Westminster (Pa.) and Defiance Colleges.
