Sydney Hawkins, a senior from Ripley, NY, was named February Resident Assistant of the Month by Residence Life.

A Biology major with a Chemistry minor, Sydney also enjoys intramural volleyball, being part of a research lab and working as a tutor on campus. She was nominated for the award by Kasling Hall Residence Director Sabrina Sosa.

“Despite a busy schedule, Sydney makes time for current and even past residents who reach out to her for help with things like academics." - Kasling Hall Director Sabrina Sosa.

“Despite a busy schedule, Sydney makes time for current and even past residents who reach out to her for help with things like academics. She is always willing to switch shifts with her peers and is usually the first to volunteer to help with something.” said Ms. Sosa.

Sosa continued, “Sydney has created sets of posters for Women's History Month, Black History Month, and LGBTQ+ History Month that are hung up in common areas on the first floor that not only are eye- catching and educational but also help show underrepresented groups. One resident liked a poster she made so much, they asked to keep the poster. So, the resident kept the original and Sydney made new ones for the building.”

Sydney’s favorite things about Fredonia are “I value the close relationships that I have been able to cultivate with my mentors, as well as the collaborative culture in the Biology department as a whole.”

Sydney discussed his upcoming plans for the future. “I am currently applying to post-baccalaureate research programs. Ultimately, I plan on obtaining my Ph.D. in Molecular Ecology."

Sosa noted that besides her reliability and great work ethic, Sydney is also a great team player, takes constructive criticism well, and stays positive during difficult times.
