Dr. Sarah Hamilton has just produced and released a new recording called “Five Inventions” with the Can-Am Oboe Trio and published by Akashikrekords.

Dr. Hamilton noted that the musicians’ intention was to support the creation of new works written in non-traditional genres for this instrumentation that were fun to play, and the trio was pleased with the results.

The trio includes Hamilton on oboe, Dr. Geralyn Giovannetti on oboe (recently retired from Brigham Young University) and English hornist Anna Mattix of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

The works were recorded a few years ago, both in Desert Fish Studios in Toronto and at SUNY Fredonia’s Rosch Recital Hall and edited by Brandon Walker and Fredonia alumnus Spencer King.

The recording features five works: one by SUNY Fredonia composer Dr. Rob Deemer, three by Canadian composers Ron Royer, Shreya Jha and Elizabeth Raum, and one work from the trio’s standard repertoire by British composer Elizabeth Aitkin.

The Canadian works were funded by a grant from the Canadian Council for the Arts. The trio has toured WNY, Southern Ontario, and Utah with these works, and performed several at the recent International Double Reed Convention at Miami University in Ohio.

Dr. Hamilton also serves as the Interim Dean of the College of Music, Theatre and Dance at SUNY Fredonia.
