Dr. Mark A. Nickerson, CPA/PFS.CMA, has been appointed to the New York State Board for Public Accountancy.
The New York State Board of Regents named Dr. Nickerson, an assistant professor of Accounting in SUNY Fredonia’s School of Business, a member serving a five-year term, effective in February.
The New York State Board for Public Accountancy is a select regulatory body composed of only a small number of appointed professionals statewide who advise the State Education Department and the Board of Regents on matters related to CPA licensure, education standards, professional ethics and the practice of public accountancy.
The board helps safeguard the public interest by overseeing educational requirements, examination and experience standards, continuing professional education and disciplinary and regulatory matters affecting certified public accountants across New York state.
Appointment to the board reflects significant professional achievement and recognition of expertise, integrity and leadership within the accounting profession. Members play an important role in shaping statewide policy decisions that influence the future of the CPA pipeline, licensure pathways and professional standards.
Nickerson teaches taxation, auditing, financial accounting and other accounting courses at SUNY Fredonia. He is actively involved in curriculum development, student mentorship and professional engagement initiatives that connect students with regional and national accounting firms and support career placement and professional success.
His appointment further strengthens the School of Business’s ties to the accounting profession and provides students with direct access to insights on licensure requirements, regulatory developments and emerging trends affecting the field.
Through this role, Nickerson will contribute to maintaining and advancing high standards of competence, ethics and public trust within the CPA profession while representing both the university and the broader western New York accounting community at the state level.
