Regular tennis season ends with loss to Brockport

Fredonia State closed out its 2021 women's tennis regular season Saturday with a 6-3 home loss to Brockport.

Bella Surma was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 5 singles and the other two Blue Devil points were via walkovers. The setback left the Blue Devils with a 2-2 mark in the conference and 3-3 overall. The would qualify for the SUNYAC Tournament by finishing either in second or third in the West Division. West leader Geneseo has already declared its season over due to COVID-19 protocol. Brockport and Oswego play Sunday and are the other contenders. Tiebreakers could come into play.

Following Saturday's match, the Blue Devils recognized two seniors who played in their final home match, Jane Chiacchia and Taylor Marelli.

Relay sets school mark

The 4 x 100 relay team of Cameron Sample, Jordan Lockett, Jacob Winn, and Nick Marsowicz set a new Fredonia State outdoor record, finishing the race in 42.19 seconds. It was a regional-qualifying time, and .17 seconds behind the first-place Cortland team.

Pellechia earns fourth SUNYAC title

For the fourth time in four tries, pole vaulter Cara Pellechia can call herself a SUNYAC Champion. Pellechia cleared 3.50m to take the outdoor title at the SUNYAC Meet on Friday.
