Rudge tapped to lead South Carolina symphony

Lisa Eikenburg

Dr. David Rudge has been appointed Music Director and Conductor of the Rock Hill Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina.

Dr. Rudge is currently Director of Orchestras and the Hillman Opera at Fredonia. He has conducted orchestras and operas in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South and Central America to critical acclaim. As Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Guatemala, he was credited with the dramatic rebirth of that orchestra. He was a Senior Fulbright Fellow, an International Artistic Ambassador with the U.S. State Department, a two-time winner of the International Opera Conductors’ Competition in the Czech Republic, and has worked with some of today’s finest soloists, such as Jeremy Denk, Mark O’Connor and Yo Yo Ma. He has taught conducting in such places as Syria, Taiwan and at the Bard College Conductor’s Institute. Known for his “Bernstein-like intensity”, the press has also described him as “dynamic”, “electric” and “grandly expressive.”

The newly-formed Rock Hill Symphony was established in 2017 by a group of musicians and supporters in Rock Hill, S.C., and serves all of York County, one of the fastest growing areas of the U.S. The Rock Hill Symphony is a fully professional orchestra made up of some of the finest players from throughout the Carolinas. The symphony is a tax exempt, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.

The Rock Hill Symphony Orchestra’s mission is to inspire, engage, and enrich the lives of community members with the transformative power of symphonic music through excellence in live performance, educational programs, and community activities.
