Sampson compositions to be performed at faculty recital

Jamie Leigh Sampson, an instructor in composition in the SUNY Fredonia School of Music, will present a recital of her works in “Uncommon Ground, Faculty Recital: Jamie Leigh Sampson, Composition" at Rosch Recital Hall on Tuesday, April 5, at 8 p.m.

Guest artists Dr. Amanda DeBoer Bartlett and alumna Mariami Bekauri will perform alongside School of Music faculty and student performers.

The program includes three world premieres and many performances of works that have yet to be presented to a live audience. The event, which is free and open to the public, will also be live-streamed.

Individual selections include: “The Body Electric,” for solo soprano; “Riddle Me,” for laptop orchestra; “Being of the Sea,” for solo tenor; “American Mother,” for mezzo-soprano and piano with text by Pamela Hart; “Mended,” for clarinet and bassoon; “In the Beginning there was… ,” for fixed media; “Broken,” for mezzo-soprano and piano with text by Pamela Hart, “LOSS,” for treble choir & string quartet; “Adrift|Entwined,” for low open instrumentation; “Thousand Times a Thousand,” for soprano, mezzo-soprano, bassoon and piano four-hands.

“The Body Electric” was commissioned by Dr. Bartlett. “Being of the Sea” was commissioned by Professor Joe Dan Harper. “Riddle Me” was commissioned by Ensemble Decipher as part of its 2021 SUNY Performance, Creativity and Curation Award. “Broken” and “LOSS” are part of an opera in-progress which won the Marion Creativity Award in 2021 and received generous support from the New York Foundation for the Arts “Keep NY State Creating” Grants. “Thousand Times a Thousand” uses text written as part of the Guerrilla Opera Libretto Writing Workshop and is part of the “Women’s Strength in Song” project grant supported by New Music USA.

In addition to Ms. Sampson, performers include School of Music faculty members Mr. Harper, Sandra Leary, Dr. Andrew Seigel, Elizabeth Hanlon, Kieran Hanlon, Dr. Andrew Martin Smith and Jacob Swanson.

Student performers include Edward Spear, Michael Redmond, Erin Alexander, Matthew Slazik, Julienne Tsang, Edward Spear and Wolfgang Scheitinger. Ms. Bekauri received a M.M. in 2018 at SUNY Fredonia.
