Fredonia student Airlea Deutscher will be one of 13 songwriters performing in the Sept. 30 showcase.
A new singer/songwriter series produced by the Department of Theatre and Dance at SUNY Fredonia will feature 13 student songwriters.
The first FredSong Singer/Songwriter Showcase takes place on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Alice E. Bartlett Theatre of Rockefeller Arts Center on the Fredonia campus.
The event is facilitated by Dr. Rob Deemer, who serves as chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance.
Dr. Deemer said an email from the department seeking performers generated a strong response. Over 30 songs were submitted for this first concert, from which the final 13 were selected.
“We have a wide variety of styles from indie rock to hip hop to ’80s retro pop and jazz,” Deemer said. “The songs themselves will be the spotlight.”
The students selected for the first showcase come from a variety of majors across campus including General Studies, Marketing, Music Industry, Musical Theatre, Music Education and Music Composition.
Tickets are available online 24/7. Tickets may also be purchased on Monday, Wednesday or Friday by phone at (716) 673-3501 or in person at the Fredonia Ticket Office in the Williams Center during the same hours. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for all students.
A second FredSong Singer/Songwriter Showcase will take place in the spring semester with a performance on Friday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Robert W. Marvel Theatre.
The singer/songwriter showcases are part of the New Works Series, an initiative by the department that also encompasses the One-Act Play Festival, The Merrins Dance events and the Envision Symposium.
Deemer said the New Works Series events are driven by student-created works and expand the opportunity for all Fredonia students to get involved with the arts on campus.
