The annual Summer Music Festival at SUNY Fredonia will offer five different music camps for middle and high school musicians, led by more than 20 faculty members from the School of Music, when it returns to an in-person format this year.

The Solo Vocal Camp, for students in grades 9 to 12 who are interested in further developing their skills as solo classical vocalists, will be held Sunday, June 26, through Saturday, July 2.

The High School Band Camp, for students in grades 9 to 12, and the Middle School Band Camp, grades 6 to 8, is open to instrumental music students (winds, brass and percussion) and will be held Sunday, June 26, through Saturday, July 2. Performance opportunities will be offered in large ensembles, chamber music and jazz.

The String Camp, designed exclusively for violin, viola, cello, and double bass players in grades 8 to 12, will be held Sunday through Saturday, July 24 to 30.

A new camp for piano, for students in grades 8 to 12, will focus on technique and musicianship for young pianists, and will be held Sunday through Saturday, June 26 to July 2.

Now in its 32nd year, the music festival was offered in an online format in the last two years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The registration deadline for all camps is June 1.

More information is available online. Dr. Tiffany Nicely, who is festival director, can also be contacted via email.

A limited number of scholarships will be offered based on the instrumentation needs of the festival. Families in financial need are strongly urged to request funding in writing from local school, religious organization or other charitable organizations, such as Rotary or Lions.

Areas to be covered by voice faculty in the Solo Vocal Camp include repertoire, how to approach text, acting, how to practice, auditioning techniques and movement. Each singer will also receive private voice instruction and have the opportunity to perform for one another throughout the week. Voice students will also participate in master classes, attend evening performances and have time for individual practice and recreation.

Summer Band Camps, for instrumental music students who are rising sixth graders through eighth  graders, and rising ninth through 12th graders, offer a friendly and relaxed setting for musical growth through performance of large ensemble and chamber music.

Performers and teachers that include School of Music faculty provide unique opportunities for learning, improving technical skills and expanding musicality. In addition to band rehearsals, chamber ensembles and jazz groups, students will attend daily musicianship classes, participate in master classes, attend evening performances and have time for individual practice and recreation.

Both band camps will conclude with a concert showcasing the large band and choral ensembles.

Daily activities of the unique Strings Camp include orchestra rehearsals, chamber music, technique classes and faculty recitals. All musical experiences are led by Fredonia string faculty and special guest artists. A final concert will conclude the camp.

Housed in the Fredonia School of Music, the summer music festival, now in its 32nd year, benefits from first-rate facilities and world-class teachers who provide unique opportunities for learning, improving technical skills and expanding musicality. Fredonia music students and alumni serve as camp counselors.

The resident registration option includes housing, meals, a group photo and camp t-shirt. There are also commuter options available with or without meals, along with a group photo and t-shirt.

A limited number of scholarships will be offered based on the instrumentation needs of the festival. Families in financial need are strongly urged to request funding in writing from local school, religious organization or other charitable organizations, such as Rotary or Lions.
