Transfer student honor society awards scholarship to Fredonia senior

Ben McKelvey

Ben McKelvey, a senior majoring in Philosophy and Political Science, has been awarded a $3,000 scholarship by Tau Sigma, the national honor society for transfer students, in recognition of his academic achievements and civic contributions.

Each year, Tau sigma awards 57 scholarships totaling $100,000 to students across the nation.

Mr. McKelvey and has been a member of Fredonia’s Tau Sigma chapter since Spring 2018, is president of its eboard, was vice president during the spring 2018 semester and has compiled a GPA of 3.66. He is also a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, the honor society for students who maintained a 3.5 or higher GPA and ranked in the top 20 percent of their class during their first year at Fredonia.

Volunteer activities pursued by McKelvey include Care Packages for Troops, Pink the Rink, Fall Sweep, Relay-for-Life and Orientation welcome tent. He served as a transfer mentor for two semesters and is a member of the Transfer Student Organization.

McKelvey is also a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and has served as its academic coordinator and judicial affairs officer.

A graduate of Fredonia High School, McKelvey previously attended SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. He plans to enroll in law school after graduation from Fredonia.

Yan Jiang, a SUNY Fredonia sophomore double major in Public Accountancy and Business Administration-Finance, was one of 52 students from throughout the State University of New York selected to receive the Norman R. McConney Jr. Award for Student Excellence.
