A new endowment fund has been established with the Fredonia College Foundation in remembrance of a former WCVF staff member and SUNY Fredonia alumnus.
The Eric Thom, ’83, WCVF Radio Memorial Scholarship was established and fully endowed by his husband, Michael Curtis. The earnings from the fund will provide support for a scholarship for a full-time Communication: Audio/Radio Production major with financial need, who demonstrates extraordinary academic performance in audio/radio courses and has interest in pursuing a career in audio/radio broadcasting. Preference will be given to student(s) involved with WCVF, the student-run radio station and part of Fredonia Radio Systems.
Eric graduated from SUNY Fredonia in 1983, and while at the university became manager of what was then known as WCVF AM & FM. As Michael noted, “Of all his memories, those from his time at Fredonia were among his happiest. He loved the university, his time working at and managing WCVF (the college radio station) and the life-long friendships he established with both fellow students and professors.” The scholarship fund was established to continue Eric’s passion for the field.
After his Fredonia years, Eric’s first job was with the Radio Advertising Bureau in New York City, where he opened the door for many Fredonia student interns. In the mid-1990s, an offer to work for KING Broadcasting brought Eric to Seattle, WA, where he became the Marketing Director for KING-AM and FM. The sale of KING Broadcasting led Eric to another opportunity, employment with the Sound Blood Center. He later became active in the non-profit world, raising millions of dollars for KPLU and KUOW radio stations, the Seattle Men’s and Women’s Choruses, HopeLink, Habitat for Humanity and Food Lifeline.
Eric, who had lived with Michael in West Seattle, WA, passed away in May 1, 2024, after a long illness. They had been married for 21 years. In addition to Michael, Eric is survived by a brother, Sam; stepchildren Paul Curtis and Erin Newton; grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
For those interested in adding to the endowment, please direct gifts to the Fredonia College Foundation, 272 Central Ave., Fredonia, NY 14063 or make a gift online at fredonia.edu/give/form.
