Food sustainability is subject of panel discussion

Organic fruit and vegetablesA panel discussion devoted to local and sustainable food production, anchored by four members from the local community, will be conducted Thursday, 6 to 7:30 p.m., at S104 Williams Center, as part of SUNY Fredonia’s comprehensive observance of Earth Week.
 
Serving on the food panel will be: Pete Calanni, of Gong Garden Farm; Keith Freeman, Freeman Homestead; Janey Wagner, Nature’s Network; and Jessamine Daly-Griffen, Starting Small Project. Environmental, health and social justice issues related to food, as well as the growing significance of food miles in the wake of rising fuel prices and other food/energy issues, will also be featured in the roundtable discussion.
 
Free organic refreshments will be served.
 
A screening of “The Future of Food,” a documentary that examines the complex web of market and political forces that are changing what Americans eat, will follow the discussion.
 
The food panel is jointly sponsored by the American Studies Program and the Earth Week Planning Committee.
