1935
Mary M. Lucariello, ’35, (elem. ed.) helped to establish the Lancaster (N.Y.) Youth Bureau and served as its first executive director. She also served on the Lancaster School Board of Education for 20 years as a member, vice president and president, and helped to establish the town of Lancaster’s Meals on Wheels program, serving as its chair for the first six years.

Evelyn L. Falk, ’36, (elem. ed.) of Collins, N.Y., has enjoyed travel throughout the world in the years following her retirement after 40 years of teaching.

Ruth (Goerke) Dunnigan, ’39, (music ed.) of Tonawanda, N.Y., is still involved with music as a supply organist and choir director at various local churches.
Doris (Reil) Bufton Harder, ’39, (elem. ed./music) of Andover, N.Y., reported her granddaughter, Cheri (Clarke) Field, ’99, (elem. ed.) graduated from Fredonia 60 years after she, and they taught together in the same school for four years until Doris retired after 47 years of teaching.

Willila (Wood) Baxter, ’41, (elem. ed.) of Marlboro, N.Y., is 86 years old and still “ticking.” She added, “my neighbor is from
Poland and we’re working on English.”

Dorothy (Horn) Longley, ’42, (elem. ed.) of Snyder, N.Y., “thoroughly enjoyed (her) 38 years of teaching.”
1944
Joan (Field) Fleckenstein, ’44, (elem. ed.) volunteers at the Jennie B. Nursing Home in Springville, N.Y., with Meals on Wheels, and is a member of her church’s Compassionate Committee. She has three great-grandchildren. She said one of her favorite activities while president of the Springville-Griffith Institute Retired Teachers was starting a scholarship for a senior going into teaching, which she reports is “still going stronger than ever.”

Marjorie (Pangborn) Brauer, ’51, (elem. ed.) just completed her twenty-first year of retirement from the Watertown (N.Y.) City School District as a fourth grade teacher. She now volunteers at Jefferson County Historical Society and is enjoying her 14-month twin grandchildren and 10-year-old granddaughter.
Robert and Nancy (Elliott) Welch, ’51, (elem. ed.) moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C., after living in Florida for 50 years.

Robert and Marjorie (Cook) Gibbs, ’52, (music ed.) are retired and moved from the Finger Lakes area to Saratoga Springs (N.Y.) seven years ago. They added they are healthy and “as busy as we want to be.”

Genevieve (Franklin) Ludemann, ’55, ’68, (elem. ed.) of Fredonia, N.Y., remains active with the League of Women Voters, is director of a Christian nursery school, and serves on the Pastoral Ministry Team at Fredonia Baptist Church.

Ruth M. Curran, ’57, (music ed.) of New City, N.Y., is still traveling and will tour the Russian waterways and enjoy skiing in Canada this year. She also golfs as often as possible, delivers Meals on Wheels, and bowls weekly.

Shirley (Miller) Erbsmehl, ’58, (elem. ed., music ed.) was part of a mission team of volunteers from the First United Methodist Church in Fredonia, N.Y., including Linda (McIlvain) Cooper, ’73, (elem. ed.) and Tom Cooper, ’73, (biology/sec. ed.), who traveled to Biloxi, Miss., in the fall to help rebuild homes in the hurricane ravaged area.

Richard E. Thomas, ’58, (music ed.) of Port Crane, N.Y., retired in 1991, went to Broome Community College for bass teaching, and has played in the Tri-Cities Opera orchestra for 48 years.
Dr. James “Jim” Young, ’58, (elem. ed.) of Beaver, Ark., is inaugurating a series of three books through the creation of “My Spiritual Awareness Series.” The titles of the trilogy include, The Creation Spirit: Expressing Your Divinity in Everyday Life; A Labor of Love: Weaving Your Own Virgin Birth on the Loom of Life; and Keys to the Door of Truth: Metaphysical Musings of a Born-Yet-Again. Sandra S. (Petersen) Fry, ’59, (music ed.) and her husband, W. Richard, are retired and spending winters in Vero Beach, Fla. They still enjoy musical activities in Erie, Pa., and Vero Beach. This fall, they played the role of the Strausses in the Erie Playhouse production of “The Titanic.”

Merrilee (Lawton) Warner, ’60, (elem. ed.) of Rotunda West, Fla., is co-leader for STAIR (Start the Adventure in Reading), an after-school volunteer program to improve second grade reading skills.

Ronald P. Budzynski, ’62, (music ed.) of Nesconset, N.Y., is a retired captain in the Civil Air Patrol as a search and rescue mission pilot.
Dr. Timothy Gallineau, ’62, (elem. ed.) is an associate professor and on the graduate faculty at Buffalo State College.
Frederick Renz, ’62, (music ed.) was director of the program presented by Early Music New York, “The King’s Musick” at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City in November 2006.

Joanne (Adragna) Shird, ’63, (elem. ed.) is retiring this month. She will be taking care of a new granddaughter three days a week, as well as weaving and writing.

Dr. Eugene Alexander, ’64, (elem. ed.) of Merrick, N.Y., has been semi-retired since selling his business in 2004. He just wrote a book to be published by booklocker.com, Tale of a Sale – Letting Go of the Family Business.
James Best, ’64, (music ed.) of Auburn, N.Y., is retired.
Charlene (Lenox) Denton, ’64, (music ed.) has retired as choir director and organist with her husband, the Rev. Frank Denton, after 40 years in the Methodist church. They moved to Gales Ferry, Conn., to care for a grandson whose parents have careers in the U.S. Coast Guard Band.
Margaret “Peg” (Guertin) Hite’s, ’64, (elem. ed.) fifth child is attending SUNY Fredonia, sophomore Katie Hite, a dual biology and education major. Peg lives in Lakewood, N.Y.
Gregory Kerkorian, ’64, (music ed.) is semi-retired and the owner of Lake State Publications, which can be viewed on the web at LakestatePublications.com. He retired from teaching in 1975.

Louis Strumpf, ’68, (math./sec. ed.) of Putnam Valley, N.Y., is in his seventh year in his second career with H&R Block, and just celebrated his thirtieth wedding anniversary.

Rebecca (Gifford) Bennett, ’69, (English) is in her fifth year of retirement from teaching English at Broome Community College in Binghamton, N.Y. She is training for a cross-country bicycle ride from San Diego, Calif., to St. Augustine, Fla. from March to May 2007 to raise money for breast cancer research.

Ruth Seaman, ’70, (elem. ed.) retired from the Watertown (N.Y.) City School District on July 1, 2006 after 36 years as an elementary teacher.
Gail E. (Belknap) Sullivan, ’70, (English) retired from teaching after 36 years in various high school classrooms and 30 years at Skaneateles (N.Y.) Central School. She is now pursuing her passion for running long distances with her husband, Joe, as her coach.

Thomas DeJoe, ’71, (elem. ed.) retired in April 2006 as senior probation officer for Chautauqua County, most recently as director of its Victim Assistance Program. He is in twenty-fifth year on the Brocton (N.Y.) Central School Board of Education, his tenth year on the board of Erie 2 Chautauqua/Cattaraugus Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), and in his third year as Area 3 Director of the New York State School Boards Association. He was recently elected to the NYSSBA’s executive committee.
Gerald Grahame, ’71, (music ed.) of Endwell, N.Y., has been a music professor for 19 years at Broome Community College where he teaches vocal music courses and is director of the College Choir. Prior to this he sang professionally as a tenor soloist with various arts organizations in the U.S.
Lynn (Goldenberg) Kaplan, ’71, (elem. ed.) of Sag Harbor, N.Y., taught in New York State and Florida from 1971 until 1986. She has owned Island Group Admin. & National PPO since 1990, and enjoys boating and golfing.
Patricia (Cybulski) Malinowski, ’71, (English) is a professor and chairperson of the Developmental Studies Department at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, N.Y., and was the recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Faculty Service in 2006.

Dr. Michael Marletta, ’73, (chem., biology) of Berkeley, Calif., is the recipient of the 2007 American Chemical Society’s Repligen Award in Chemistry of Biological Processes, recognizing his pioneering work in the area of nitric oxide. The ACS noted in announcing the award, “His intellectual creativity and bold experimental outlook will continue to direct his research programs to study challenging and medically important programs at the forefront of biological chemistry.”
Nancy (Jelonek) Walcutt, ’73, (elem. ed.) retired from Worthington (Ohio) City Schools in July 2006 after teaching special education for over 33 years.

Wende Persons, ’74, (music ed.) is a web marketing consultant at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, a marketing consultant for the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and Great Music at St. Bartholomew’s, and a member of the steering committee for Music & Media, a new radio/performing arts collaboration. She is an adjunct professor of the course, “Marketing for Performing Arts” at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Education, and has done consulting work for American Public Media’s Classical Music Initiative, National Public Radio, Public Radio International and Artemis Records/Vanguard Classics. She formerly worked as website manager for WXQR, the classical station of The New York Times; at Universal Classics Group, Deutsche Grammophon, WQED-FM in Pittsburgh, Pa., Pittsburgh Opera, Wolf Trap, and the Eastman School of Music. She was the librettist of the opera Patience and Sarah by Paula Kimper which was premiered at Lincoln Center Festival ’98.
Mike Tofil, ’74, ’79, (soc. studies/sec. ed.) retired in July 2006 after 32 years as a branch manager for Western Region Off-Track Betting Corp. He, his wife, Kristin, and daughter, Alexis, live in the East Town of Dunkirk, N.Y.

Dr. Marjorie Dobbin, ’75, (English) proudly announces that her first novel, an inspiration romance, In The Shadow of Pickle Peak, was released in September 2006 by Publish America. She taught at Emmanuel College in the 1980s while working on her Ph.D. at the University of Georgia in medieval English literature. She later taught at Brewton-Parker College in Mt. Vernon, Ga., until her retirement in 2001. Marjorie lives with her husband, A.B. Albritton, in Vidalia, Ga.
Rosanne (Murszewski) Keegan, ’75, (history) of Chesepeake City, Md., is enjoying retirement after leaving the insurance industry in 2005. She would love to hear from friends.

Nancy (Ponosuk) Lanson, ’77, (bus. admin.) of Farmingdale, N.Y., served as an American Association of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) delegate at the group’s recent convention in Chicago, Ill. She is Membership Chair for the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) Long Island Region, and a CSEA delegate on the Long Island Federation of Labor.
Richard E. Lundquist, ’77, (music ed.) continues as middle grades band director at Chautauqua Lake Central School in Mayville, N.Y. He is also an adjunct faculty member in applied music at Jamestown Community College and a special studies instructor at Chautauqua Institution.
Concerts featuring the compositions of Roland E. “Ron” Martin, ’77, (music ed.) were performed in November 2006 by the Freudig Singers of Buffalo (N.Y.) at Trinity Lutheran Church in Buffalo, and by the Chautauqua Chamber Singers at Zion Covenant Church in Jamestown, N.Y., both conducted by Ron. He works in the department of music at the University at Buffalo and was the subject of a “Critical Eye” feature by Robert W. Plyer in the Dunkirk Observer in October 2006.

Ardell (Wolfer) Olin, ’77, (elem. ed.) reports that after almost 30 years of teaching in the Akron (N.Y.) Elementary School, she has been named to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. She adds that Kristina Olin, ’06, (child ed.) is following the family tradition and teaching in Cary, N.C. another daughter, Cassandra, is a current music major at Fredonia planning a career in teaching. She says hello to her Fredonia friends.
Laurel (Long) O’Sullivan, ’77, (art) is a full professor art at California Sate University, Northridge, and is completing illustrations for her fourth children’s book, Hans Brinker, while also working on the book and pre-production design of the film, “Holly Claus.”

Amy Syd (Israeloff) Babcock, ’78, (theatre) of Westford, Mass., just released her second CD, “An Armful of Flowers.” Besides being a singer-songwriter, Amy is a drama coach and co-director of an after-school children’s drama program in Harvard, Mass. William Fredrickson, ’78, (music ed.) accepted a new position as professor of music education and assistant dean for operations at Florida State University College of Music in Tallahassee.
JoAnne (Wasko) Gustafson, ’78, (elem. ed.) of Jamestown, N.Y., was initiated into Delta Kappa Gamma in 2006.
Dr. Margot Kelman, ’78, (speech and hear. hand.) earned her Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Wichita State University. Her dissertation, “An Investigation of Preschool Children’s Primary Literacy Skills” was defended in November 2006. She has been a speech-language pathologist for over 25 years.
Steve O’Sullivan, ’78, (special studies) is executive editor of the Pasadena Star News and two other Southern California daily newspapers. He recently completed his M.B.A. at Claremont Graduate University and is an adjunct instructor in mass media ethics and law at the University of La Verne.
Susan L. Weber, ’78, (music ed.) is a music teacher at Uniondale (N.Y.) Public Schools.

Scott De’Aeth, ’79, (biology) is vice president at Genzyme Drug and Biomaterial Research and Development of Waltham, Mass.
Herman “Moose” Erbacher, ’79, (music ed.) is in his twenty-seventh year at Newfane (N.Y.) High School, teaching instrumental music. He has been nominated blues bass player of the year by Nightlife magazine, and his band, Border City Blues, won Blues Beat magazine’s 2006 Band of the Year.
In addition to doing voice overs for the local FOX affiliate, Lorraine Rapp, ’79, (special studies) of Fayetteville, N.Y., is currently an associate producer at an ABC affiliate on a one hour daily talk and entertainment television show, “Bridge Street with Rick and Julie.”
Nancy Quackenbush-McComb, ’79, (English) began a new career as a teacher of English and works with special needs students at Washingtonville (N.Y.) High School. She earned her C.M.S. in Education from Mount St. Mary College in 2003.

Cynthia (Duncan) Holton, ’80, (French) is senior vice president for the U.S. Council for International Business in New York City.
James Newton, ’80, (econ.) is a financial analyst for Lockheed Martin in Sunnyvale, Calif.
Jess Rudolph, ’80, (bus. admin.) is executive director of the Jericho (N.Y.) Educational Foundation.
The Rev. Marta I. Valentin, ’80, (special studies) is minister of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of New Orleans, La. Professor Emeritus Dan Berggren shares that Marta formerly worked at WGBH-FM in Boston, Mass. before going to divinity school. After interning and part-time ministering, her first sermon in her first church in New Orleans was to have been the weekend Hurricane Katrina hit. She lost her belongings, the church was flooded and the congregation was scattered. This year, she was asked by the Unitarian Universalist Association to write a prayer for the Thanksgiving season, and those interested can find it online at www.firstuuno.org.

Douglas Knoll, ’81, (music ed.) is still living in the San Franciso (Calif.) Bay area and recently returned from touring with the Air Force Band of the Golden West. Jackie Winter, ’04, (chem.) is at Scripps Institute of Oceanography in LaJolla, Calif., working with Dr. Bradley Moore, who she started research with while in the graduate program in biological chemistry at the University of Arizona. In her report to Professor Emeritus Philip Kumler she noted, “I really am lucky to be here! I couldn’t ask for more perfect weather, but more importantly SIO-USCD is now known as the ‘hot spot’ for marine natural products!”

Andy Slater, ’05, (biochem.) has accepted a position with Albany Molecular Research Institute as a research scientist. He previously worked for Stiefel Laboratories. In his own words, as reported by Professor Emeritus Philip Kumler, “It should be an awesome job and I am wicked excited.”

Christina Chely, ’06, (commun./pub. rel., psych.) of New York City was hired by Peppercom as a junior account executive after serving as intern at the company.
Jamel Corbett, ’06, (account.) works for Paralegal Services of Buffalo, N.Y., assisting with various legal composition and criminal record searches. His ultimate goal is to attend law school.
Sarah Del Monte, ’06, (account.) was named an accountant in the Jamestown, N.Y. office of certified public accounting firm Buffamante Whipple Buttafaro, P.C. She will have corporate responsibilities in the areas of compiling, reviewing and auditing financial statements, along with general tax work assignments.
