The book comes out of a research project under the same name funded by the National Committee of New Qing History Project in China. Dr. Ma is the director of the project and chief editor of the book.

This is a reference book devoted to the scholarly publications in Qing history in the U.S. since 1971. It contains citations for 450 monographs, 750 journal articles, 850 articles from conference volumes, and 438 Ph.D. dissertations that were produced from 1971 to 2007.

The entries are grouped into 24 broad topical categories, such as political institution, foreign relations, women and gender, urban studies, ethnic relation and border issues.

Each category is followed by a list of related scholarly works, in English and Chinese translation. It also includes a Preface, References, a List of Journal Searched, a List of Conference Volumes Cited, a List of Institutions where the Cited Ph.D. Dissertations were produced, and an Author’s Index.

The book is designed to provide researchers a quick guide to find secondary literature on the topic.
