5 Ways to Improve Communication in the Workplace

A Communication Theory Textbook - Written by Students, for Students

Theories help us to make sense of the world around us. Regardless of their scope, all theories shape how we make judgments about reality, relationships, circumstances, and decisions in our lives. This textbook exposes readers to theories of communication, both large and small, with the intention of better equipping readers to make sense of the communicative aspects of your world.

This textbook is the result of a collaboration among students enrolled in COMM430: Communication Theory.  The general purpose of the textbook is to introduce readers to major issues and perspectives in communication studies while helping them think about and analyze communication in a systematic way (i.e., in a theoretical way).

Health CommunicationHealth Communication From the Student Perspective

This book-in-progress has been (and is being) almost entirely created by undergraduate students and recent alums enrolled in COMM 303: Health Communication.

The purpose of the text is to familiarize readers with the broader discipline of health communication to gain a greater understanding of health and wellness interactions in the interpersonal, sociocultural, organizational, mass media, and public health contexts. The text will not only discuss public health and how to persuade the public to live a healthy lifestyle, but will also investigate effective patient-provider communication, how to provide social support for others, and delineate contemporary ethical dilemmas. Consequently, the text is designed to expose readers to ideas, theories, and strategies that create an informed consumer, patient, and professional.

BuzzFeed Links

BuzzFeed Student Work

BuzzFeed is one of the largest online publishers. Recent statistics show that the site gets 200+ million unique visitors each month with 60 percent of traffic coming from mobile. 50 percent of visitors are between 18-34 years old. 75 percent of BuzzFeed traffic comes from social media.
For this group project, your task will be to identify a target market, create a BuzzFeed article or quiz that appeals to that market and reach that market using online promotion principles and targeted influencer outreach. Your success in reaching the market will partly be determined by the amount of views you generate (1,000 for full credit).
