The College of Education, a pioneer in teacher education in Western New York, is playing a key role in the development of S-TEN (SUNY Teacher Education Network), a new statewide system that will enable SUNY campuses to better prepare teachers and educational leaders.
S-TEN was launched in November at a national teacher education summit convened in Albany to facilitate the sharing of best practices in teacher and school leader education in use by faculty and administrators.
Dr. Christine Givner, founding dean of the College of Education at SUNY Fredonia, chaired the S-TEN design team and served as one of its six conference speakers.
“The SUNY teacher and leader preparation network convening represents a powerful demonstration of the SUNY teacher education community’s commitment to our ongoing work to improve the preparation of educators and to ensure effective teachers and leaders for P-12 schools,” Dean Givner said.
According to SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher, “S-TEN will be a broadly inclusive learning community for teacher educators the likes of which New York has never before seen.” By drawing upon the best and most talented faculty and administrators throughout SUNY and gathering expertise from external partners, SUNY will collaboratively develop a powerful new approach to the preparation of teachers.
S-TEN will enable SUNY to establish a network of institutions with the shared purpose of renewing and improving the preparation of teachers and educational leaders throughout New York, engaging SUNY faculty across the state who prepare future teachers and educational leaders in high quality professional development and research.
Through a series of faculty development and research opportunities, S-TEN will enable SUNY to lead campus faculty as they engage with their P-12 partners in education to implement clinically rich teacher and leader preparation strategies, both before and after certification.
