‘Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!’ rolls into Marvel

Christine Davis Mantai

 Pigeon and Busdriver

A clever pigeon, left, does his best to talk the bus driver into letting him take the wheel in “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!” The play is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Feb. 8 in SUNY Fredonia’s Marvel Theatre as part of the Kaleidoscope Family Series at Rockefeller Arts Center.

Tickets for “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!” are available online at www.fredonia.edu/tickets, at the SUNY Fredonia Ticket Office in the Williams Center or by calling 716-673-3501(1-866-441-4928).

Children of all ages take note: No matter how much you are tempted, do not let the pigeon take the wheel of the bus.

This warning should be taken to heart on Friday, Feb. 8 as “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!” takes center stage for a 7 p.m. performance in Marvel Theatre at Rockefeller Arts Center on the State University of New York at Fredonia campus.

The show is the second event in the Kaleidoscope Family Series sponsored by Howard Hanna Holt Real Estate. It is part of the Lake Shore Savings Season.

Based on Mo Willems’ award-winning children’s book of the same title, “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!” is an engaging tale in which a clever pigeon tries his best to entice the audience to let him take the wheel. Of course, this goes against the instructions given by the bus driver. The pigeon proceeds to plead his case through song, bribes and plenty of whining.

Geared for children ages 5 to 10, the show features audience participation and original music with the promise of “fun, feathers, laughter and excitement.” It is approximately one hour in length.

The Big Wooden Horse Theatre Co. of Great Britain, which specializes in creating high quality theater for younger audiences, will present the two-performer show. The theater company strives to both entertain and inform young people with productions that put the focus on language arts, theater, interpersonal skills and character education.

With “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus,” the theater company has created a production which brings the award-winning work of Willems to life for audiences.

Willems is a six-time Emmy Award winner for his writing on the children’s classic “Sesame Street” and is the creator of the Cartoon Network series “Sheep in the Big City.” He earned a Caldecott Award for “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!”
