Alum, honors seminar instructor, named Fellow

Dr. John BaustDr. John Baust (in photo), a member of the SUNY Fredonia Class of 1965, who is a UNESCO Chair and Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at SUNY Binghamton, was named a Fellow of the International Society for Cryobiology at its recent meetings in Japan.

The honor recognized his legacy contributions in developing a curative cancer therapy.

Dr. Baust, who is also Director of the Institute of Biomedical Technology at Binghamton, is one of only 10 individuals named a Fellow in the society’s 45-year history.

This fall, Dr. Baust is the lead instructor of the SUNY Fredonia honors seminar in cancer biology. He is lecturing in-person and via distance learning in conjunction with biology department Chair Patricia Astry and faculty Dr. Wayne Yunghans and Dr. Ted Lee. Dr. Baust will host the Fredonia students and faculty at his lab in November, where they will meet his co-workers, perform some tests, and hear presentations.

Dr. Baust will be recognized with the Fredonia Alumni Association’s Outstanding Achievement Award at this year’s Homecoming celebration on Oct. 10.

Kessler receives AIA Moynihan Award

Markus Kessler, who has shepherded approximately 120 SUNY Fredonia construction projects having a combined value of over $430 million, has received the 2024 Daniel Patrick Moynihan Award, one of three Professional Awards conferred by AIA (American Institute of Architects) New York State.
