Faculty will discuss artificial intelligence and academic integrity during two roundtables to be moderated by Drs. Bob Dahlgren and Jennifer Hildebrand.

The group will also contemplate the role that artificial intelligence can and should play at SUNY Fredonia.

Panelists will include Christina Hilburger, Stephen Komp, and Drs. KimMarie Cole, Michael Dunham, Kathleen Gradel and John Staples.

The first event is slated for Tuesday, Nov. 7, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., focusing on student perceptions and experiences.

The second, on Wednesday, Nov. 15, from noon until 1 p.m., will focus on faculty experiences, questions, concerns and success stories.

Both roundtables will be held in Williams Center Rooms S204DE, and are designed so the panel can engage with students, faculty, and staff on these issues and any others that may arise.

The plan for the roundtables arose from a consideration of whether the university’s existing Academic Integrity policy appropriately addresses the rise of ChatGPT and other forms of artificial intelligence now readily available.

Organizers note that possibilities have grown exponentially, and that it  raises many issues. Those that have been discussed included questions about how much any student/faculty/staff can reasonably be expected to know about the workings of artificial intelligence, questions about how  students perceive it, and disciplinary differences in uses of it in research and teaching. Discussions emphasized the unknown and potential disadvantages while also acknowledging and embracing clear advantages that artificial intelligence software can provide.

In addition, organizers note that they are eager to share thoughts and reflections with colleagues, but even more importantly, to hear thoughts, concerns, and success stories, “Please bring your questions, your ideas, your students, your lunch, and anything else you’d like!”
