The 2024 Eclipse Event Planning Committee has been formed to assist in coordinated planning for the Monday, April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse, its totality called a “once in a lifetime” event.

The committee, chaired by Emergency Planning Coordinator Charles Holder from the Department of Environmental Health and Safety and Sustainability, and Dr. Michael Dunham of the Department of Physics, are looking at logistics for a maximum of 5,000 viewers on campus.

The tentative planned viewing area is the large field adjacent to University Stadium. The official viewing event is tentatively slated for approximately 2 to 4 p.m., and totality will occur at approximately 3:17 p.m.

The committee wishes those on campus to know that appropriate glasses for viewing the eclipse have been purchased through a grant to Dr. Dunham from the Carnahan Jackson Fund for the Humanities through the Fredonia College Foundation. There will be enough to distribute one free pair per student, faculty and staff member, and will be available for pickup at a date in March to be determined.

Food trucks are planned and other events and entertainment will be determined in the future by the planning committee. To suggest activities for the day, contact Dr. Dunham via email. Academic departments and other areas are requested not to add programming during the official campus event before consultation with the planning committee, the Provost and the President.
