Several workshops will be held to support students who want to participate in the SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC).
At the Ready, Set, Submit Workshops, students can receive assistance in writing successful proposals they can submit to SURC-West that will be held at SUNY Fredonia on Friday, April 24.
For this year, the campus’ venerable OSCAR Expo has been transformed into SURC-West.
Undergraduate students and faculty mentors from SUNY’s 63 other affiliated campuses will be invited to share their work and attend, creating a much larger stage for SUNY Fredonia students to showcase their research to a wide audience.
“The OSCAR Expo is not going away; it’s just going to be bigger this year and will be called SURC-West 2026,” said Jill Reese, director of OSCAR (Office of Student Creativity and Research Activity).
Workshops providing in-person guidance devoted to preparing exhibit applications will be held Thursday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m.; Wednesday, Feb. 11, 9 a.m.; and Thursday, Feb. 19, 9 a.m., in the OSCAR Hub in Reed Library. The proposals can have a long shelf life, as students can also submit them to professional conferences.
Students should register for workshop sessions
“The Ready, Set, Submit Workshops will help students write a clear and professional abstract for the application/submission process. Staff and faculty will provide small group and individual support specific to the student’s discipline and goal,” Dr. Reese explained.
SURC-West will offer the same great opportunities for research posters, oral presentations, performances, art exhibits and a film festival that have been part of the OSCAR Expos for decades. A keynote speech will be included, and a luncheon can be selected by registrants who choose to pay for that option.
The deadline for applying to present at SURC-West is Feb. 22. Students should submit proposals for SURC electronically.
SURC is a multidisciplinary event. There is only one other SURC event – SUNY-Central, at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY, on April 24.
